#TransparencyMoment: Creating Life Looks Different for Me

There are some projects that become more than client work and this project has been one of them.

I’ve been very transparent about my inability to carry children and the grief I’ve experienced knowing that I will never physically bring life into this world.

So there is something deeply personal about the fact that I now get to use my gifts to support an organization whose work centers Black mothers, birthing people, families, and maternal health.

I’ve had the privilege of working with Dr. Shalon’s Maternal Action Project to strengthen their digital presence.

Their new website is officially live, but the work didn’t stop when we hit publish.

I’m continuing to make enhancements to the website, strengthen the SEO, improve content structure, and analyze how people are finding the organization. And when Black women continue to face a significantly higher risk of dying from pregnancy-related causes, helping this information become easier to find feels different.

There is an interesting tenderness in working so closely around pregnancy and motherhood while simultaneously carrying my own grief around not being able to experience pregnancy myself. But somewhere in this process, another thought started settling into my spirit:

Maybe creating life looks different for me. Maybe I will not create life through my body. But I can create things that help protect life.

I can create access. I can create visibility. I can create connections. I can create tools. I can create platforms that help organizations reach the people they were created to serve. I can use what I know about technology, websites, SEO, digital strategy, storytelling, and user experience to help meaningful work travel further.

And there is something incredibly healing about realizing that.

Sometimes grief is simply grief. But I also believe we can discover new ways to use what is already in our hands.

This project has reminded me just how much I love helping organizations build digital ecosystems that actually support their mission. Digital infrastructure that helps people find you, understand you, trust you, and take action.

So yes, I am incredibly proud to share the newly launched digital home for Dr. Shalon’s Maternal Action Project: drshalonsmap.org
